The Whirinaki Forest Park lies between the Kaingaroa Forest and the Te Urewera National Park. Access is via Sate Highway.38 from Murupara turning off just before Te Whaiti.

The park has many short bush walks close to the main entry via Te Whaiti. The Forest Sanctuary is an easy loop track via the Whirinaki Waterfall Track that leads to the waterfall.

Bird life is abundant, especially the rare kaka and red and yellow crowned kakariki. The Whirinaki, Rangitaiki and Whaeo rivers have excellent trout fishing
